Classmates

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend our 55th Class of 1961 Reunion due to conflicting plans for the first couple of weeks in September to which my wife and I are committed. Darn!

I was in the Albany area the last part of April for an event at Albany Medical College and drove around the Town of Bethlehem including Elsmere, Delmar and Van Weis Point in Glenmont and was amazed at the additions on the Jr. High and Sr. High Schools, changes at the old Four Corners (now clearly five), relocation of the Town Hall offices and Public Library, all the new housing, new businesses and evidence of growth and development. The changes and new buildings at the Albany Medical Center were impressive as well. The tulips were coming into full bloom at the park adjacent to Madison Avenue which was drawing out the public.

I tried to arrange for lunch or dinner with Mrs. Pock , but she was tied up with Passover celebrations (she keeps a Kosher kitchen and has a Seder celebration nightly for a week) so we couldn’t meet but we had a long chat on the phone. She is doing well and has a couple of younger relatives living with her at her home on Hackett Blvd.

My wife and I get together with Dorothy( Raymond) Matsui and her husband Yas for dinner and the Seattle Symphony at least once a year. Barbara meets Sharon( Adams) Schmid for lunch annually at a half-way point between our towns. We don’t see anyone from BCHS ‘61 unfortunately. Out here in the Pacific Northwest at the Southern end of the Olympic Park I like to say “We’re not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here.” I had a great time digging razor clams on local beaches with neighbors and also reeled in a 60 lb. Halibut the last day of the season from a spot about 12 miles off the coast.

My wife and I are happy in our retirement and staying engaged in our individual activities. Our three children are married, have produced 4 grandchildren and have busy lives(2 live north of Seattle; 1 in St Paul). My wife and I picked up our oldest (10 yrs old) grand child in St Paul and took him to Washington DC during Spring Recess this year, a new adventure for the grandparents!

I was looking forward to reuniting with BCHS classmates this year but it seems that Barbara and I will have to forego the September affair due to previous travel plans. I hope you have a great time together! Hope to be able to join with you at our 60th Reunion -

It would be helpful for some to give classmates a year’s advance notice (if possible) for the 60th celebration.

Some thoughts at the time of our 55th Class Reunion: Do not regret growing old ____, it is a privilege denied to many. Also: Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional!
